Make a Yarn Bowl - Individual pottery experience
*Important, exciting update 20.03.24*
I will be going on maternity leave at the start of May 2024. All pottery experiences purchased during my maternity leave, will be valid from the date I restart pottery experiences for up to a year. If you purchase your pottery experience between now and July 2025 (when I am hoping to be up and running again), you will be sent an email with booking information upon my return. If you would like to be notified when my pottery experiences have started back up again, please email me at fi@fichceramics.co.uk. I will be checking my emails periodically through my maternity leave but please expect a slight delay. Alternatively, I will put a notice on my website, so you can check back here.
Make a new bowl for your favourite yarn.
To do this course you don’t need to have any previous experience.
- North Abingdon, Oxfordshire.
- One to one tuition
- Make and keep your very own hand-thrown yarn bowl that has been neatened up and is watertight
- Experiences for two by arrangement
- Flexible time and days
- Calming atmosphere
- Taught in working home ceramics studio
- Bowl completed in three sessions
- Duration for an individual's session is about 5.5 hours in total
What can I expect?
The process to make a pot is in three parts.
Session 1 (2 hours)
Firstly, you will watch the art of throwing a bowl while drinking a tea or coffee with a chocolate biscuit. During the demonstration I will go through each movement to explain what I’m doing and why, but don’t panic, when it’s your turn on the wheel I will go through everything again so that you feel comfortable. We will make one bowl together and if this takes a couple of attempts, that’s no problem at all.
My friendly studio pup, Inca, happily sleeps through the whole experience, only waking up at the beginning and end for cuddles. She wont be offended if you'd prefer not to though!
This session usually lasts for an hour and a half on a one to one basis. Experiences for two people can be arranged as well, these will last around 3.5 hours.
Session 2 (2.5 hours)
The second part of the process happens a week later, when the bowl has had a chance to dry out a bit. Your bowl will be put upside down on the wheel and the excess clay will be carved off to create a ‘foot’. You'll then use a potter's knife to cut out a pattern which you'll eventually feed your yarn through. To finish it off, you’ll stamp it with your name using some letter stamps. Your bowl will then be left to dry out slowly before being fired. Your bowl will then be fired and it will then be glazed, in your final session.
Session 3 (1 hours)
For this session you will glaze your yarn bowl. You have the choice of any colour that has been in any of my colour palettes, past and present, totalling in approximately 20 different colours. The glaze will be applied with soft paintbrushes and 3 layers will be applied in total. After this session your pot will be fired again and then you can either collect your pot or have it posted to you for no extra charge.
And finally, go home and create a new jumper using your new yarn bowl!
Would you like to have a go at making your very own yarn bowl?
